Sorch popping out of the water in some murky creek. a smile from this guy is rare-- i'm not even sure he really understands the expression or relates to it, or is just mimicking it for the sake of the pose; gator emotions i've observed range only from "meh" to rage. joyless bunch, those lizards. MAYBE HE LEARNS TO LOVE.

lately i've been working on getting out of strict vector because it's time consuming and finding ways to happily wed both veck and raster elements (the useful ones anyhow) to get richer images faster, like i used to. the "ripple" function here was a pain in the ass-- several tries later, this is the best i could get. not quite what i wanted, but it works. my hand-drawn watery effects aren't much better but it all came together pretty nice in the end.

i'm not cheating on vector, i swear. i'll go back. just don't need every image taking a week to complete (working on it every day.) vector lines and color and gradients, raster flourishes like the highlights and BG and finishing.

FYI, this is a clean version. ... and don't worry FA will get the full one i'm not risking another ban complete with raised eyebrows i'd gotten used to, between my two DA accounts' beastly debauchery. :P **

IS IT TOO DARK!? IT FUCKED UP HIS TEETH i have the power to fix it but will continue to complain instead...

I don't find it too dark... If I were to lighten up anything it'd be the light outline and wispy lines around him in the water... Maybe that'd brighten things a touch, but leave the overall murkiness alone.

I really dig the way he's mostly submerged and the ripple effect is dandy!

Neato!

I can't say if it's too dark or too light- the top of my monitor shows things darker, the bottom- lighter.... It's strange like that for some reason.

This picture just reeks of wet rotting swamp stuff... whitch, in this case, IS REALLY GOOD.

Rather than smiling that looks like "Durrrrr"

Awesome work x3.

I like it. Very cool ripple effect. ^^ And yea, you can tell he doesn't smile often, haha, since he doesn't really look like he's comfortable doing it. But it's very gentle at the same time, I dunno, makes him look like a teddy bear.

With him being a croc >> anyway! Nice effect on the hair too. It's not too dark on my monitor, then again, I have an LCD so mine's naturally bright.

And I agree, you can almost smell the swamp. Very nice.

i didn't like the wispy water lines around him enough to draw any more attention to them lol. i mean i like... the effect that is implied by the sub-par job i did, but... i mighta highlighted them better if i thought i worked it better is what i'm saying.

but yeah that was what i was concerned about-- some disambiguation between him against the water (all those little hair wisps i DID like and they let lost in the dark without good ripples.)

Don't expect the best, you won't be disappointed when you take a bite and watch the worm crawl back inside.
:iconsparkpenguin:
not all swamps smell rotten. well, sewer outlets and most of southern Georgia does. but in Georgia's case it might just be nearby paper mills. :P

at any rate i'm glad the picture sent a fitting mood and even sensory information to you!

yeah, it's kind of a confused novice attempt at a smile a slow person might make, i thought. the "dur" i noticed and regretted was the OBVIOUS OVERBITE that the shadowing layer effected on his teeth because i used too strong a shadow on the ones inside his mouth. that's what i complained about in the scripto-- if you're seeing something that's a bigger problem i have to add that to my laundry list of "get better at doing art shithead." :P

HE IS NOT A CROC NOR A CAIMAN NOR A GHARIAL FOR THE MILLION-AND-TENTH TIME HE IS AN ALLIGATOR AND THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE NO WAIT
NOT JUST ONE BUT SEVERAL MAJOR DIFFERENCES</V> THAT REQUIRED AN ENTIRE SEPARATE TAXON FROM OTHER CROCODILIANS INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO CROCODILES
FUCK CROCS
FUCK THE OUTSIDE WORLD
AMERIKUUUUHHHHHHHHH
AAAAMEEEERIKKKUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

putting aside the humor in tacky caps-buggery, it is kind of a distinction that's actually important (to me, anyway.) and i am actually really happy that two people commended my... swamp atmosphere. it was almost 86'd after the ripple filter became more trouble than it was worth. :P

I know, the croc has a longer snout and is not native to North America, however, you saying America also implies the Caiman and the south american crocodile, just saying. and the alligator is a much more docile breed that tolerates humans more than the much more aggressive crocodile. I was just being lazy. I actually used the two species as my basis for my SAT essay, ^^

Well, glad you didn't. It's pretty bad ass. Atmosphere is sometimes really hard to do in drawings.
